Concord is still one shelf below its competitors - Preview

concord preview

The GaaS market, or as it is known to the masses: Games of Service, is an extremely strong market at the moment, but very inconsistent. You see games that used to be nothing, such as Fortnite Save the Worldto become the phenomenon it is today with Fortnite Battle Royale.

Other games, such as Counter Strikehave managed to remain relevant even without major changes, while others such as Dead By DaylightAlthough it is still very strong in the market, it has fallen a lot in terms of relevance.

While Xbox started investing in service games a few years ago with Forza Horizon e Sea of Thieves, it was also the turn of PlayStation enter this market strongly, starting with Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2 and now Concord.

First of all, this preview of Concord was only possible due to an advance key sent by the PlayStation Brasil.

Concord has charisma, but that alone doesn't sustain it

Concord Right from the start, it appears to be a little deeper than other hero-shooter games on the market, showing that there is a narrative with progression, somewhat reminiscent of campaign games.

We see a crew made up of the characters Asterion, Lennox, Vale, Haymar e UN1QU0 trying to join the Freegunners, a group of adventurers and outlaws who work as hired guns.

With this, the crew of the North Star will engage in countless tasks in the six available PvP modes, ranging from 12 maps available at the game's launch.

A story in constant progression

As this is a service game, we'll see the story of the Freegunners and the North Star Crew evolve each week with new cutscenes, as well as free additions of new maps, modes and characters at no extra cost.

It is also worth noting that it is confirmed that Concord there won't be a battle pass, in other words, we'll only have a store focused on skins. No character purchases or challenges where you have to level up.

The aesthetics of the game end up embracing some of what was Overwatch at its beginning, or even Call of Duty in the past.

A major disconnect from the current market

Taking into account the gunplay, characters and universe of Concordwe can say that Concord may be the best game of its kind today, but that's not all a game of its kind consists of.

We can see in many ways that Concord is completely disconnected from the current GaaS market, which is even a bit strange.

Starting with the fact that there is no matchmaking at the end of matches, forcing you to go back to the main menu and search again.

You'll also be faced with maps that are too big for too few characters in the game and movement that is too slow, suffering greatly from the fact that there are few life points distributed across the map and life doesn't regenerate on its own, requiring the use of support characters.

Considering that teamwork needs to be effective, the game would need to try to balance the classes allowed to be chosen at the moment. After all, you can't have a duplicate character on the same team, but you can have several characters of the same class.

What's the point of playing Concord?

Concord won't have a battle pass, and during the beta there wasn't much of a progression-based replay factor to the game.

So, while Fortnite is constantly evolving with daily and weekly challenges, hidden rewards, skins being released and a battle pass-based lore, Concord will suffer a little from this.

We'll see your story progress each week, but through cutscenes that last no more than a minute, and which so far have had no impact on the matches, giving you the feeling that there's no reason to actually play the game.

I think that for the game to stand out from its competitors, it needs more. Something that really makes the player want to open the game every day and progress. At least we'll see full cross-play between PlayStation 5 e PCpossibly also a cross-save.

Is it worth playing?

At the moment the beta of Concord is closed and we'll have to wait until the game's official release to enjoy it again. But from what we've seen so far, it's not a game that stands out on the market.

It remains to be seen whether Firewalk will take on board the community's feedback and improve the game as much as possible, making the maps a little smaller, speeding up respawn times, reducing ttk, focusing on progression and more.

Concord comes to PlayStation 5 e PC on August 23rd.
