In this article you'll find out from our review of Akimbot whether or not the game is worth playing.

The studio Evil Raptor, based in Lyon, France, returns with its incredible team of just six employees who have the goal of reviving the essence of 3D platform games from the early PlayStation era.

Games like MediEvil, Jak & Dexter, Ratchet & Clank and others are part of the premise that the studio wants, and they are gradually gaining ground.

First he started with Pumpkin Jackwhich was launched in 2020 and is almost a journey back in time for MediEvil. Now it's Ratchet & Clank "back" with Akimbot, the studio's newest release.

A simple premise that does justice to the golden age of video games

Akimbot doesn't have a very complex storyline, which can be a bit strange for modern gamers, but extremely popular with old-school gamers.

In Akimbot the characters Exe and Shipset, two outlaw robots, must stop a former scientist called Malignotron from wreaking havoc in the galaxy. To do so, they need to uncover the truth behind the intergalactic war and take on the roles of heroes.

Akimbot is diverse in its gameplay and original in its visuals

The first step, Akimbot ends up "scaring" you a little with its visuals. After all, it's a bit of a mixed bag, taking a stylized look and shocking it with countless particles worthy of the latest generation of consoles. But as the hours go by, Akimbot begins to take you by the arm and show you that there is an original look in every pixel.

The beauty of the game begins to be portrayed when Exe and Shipset have to defeat the evil forces in other ways, such as with a kind of tank, a buggy, a beat em' up screen and even a spaceship.

Akimbot explores countless genres and ways of portraying in detail what the games of yesteryear tried to deliver to players.

A perfect game for 3D platform lovers

Combining the action scenes, Shipset's amusing humor that emphasizes how grouchy Exe is, Akimbot manages to build the numerous 3D platform sections very well.

You'll find countless moments when you have to walk through walls with a kind of "magnet" that ends up holding you until you reach the end of the path; release your hook in distant places to get there or even use your propulsion system to do double jumps and airborne attacks.

Don't forget, of course, to keep updating your arsenal so that you can destroy as many troops as possible along the way.

Is Akimbot the perfect Evil Raptor game?

It's very difficult for a game to be perfect these days, even more so if we consider that being perfect means being unanimous. Definitely not, Akimbot is not perfect, but it shows that Evil Raptor is on the right track.

The game ends up slipping up on a few things, such as the somewhat precarious loading screen, some animations seeming to "not fit" perfectly, making it clear that it lacks a bit of polish.

But at the same time, I didn't have any technical problems with the game, and everything was very fluid, original and creative. Akimbot is in fact a very entertaining game that deserves the attention of fans of Pumpkin Jack and, of course, games like Ratchet & Clank and others of the time.

Akimbot is now available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
