Dusk Falls gets a second chance to shine - Review

After working as Lead Gamer Designer at Quantic Dreamthe former studio of Sony and famous for creating incredible experiences such as Beyond Two Souls e Heavy Rain, Caroline Marchal founded INTERIOR/NIGHTthe studio behind The Dusk Falls.

The vision of INTERIOR/NIGHT according to Caroline Marchal is to produce games and rich narrative experiences for people who love programs like Breaking Bad or Fargobut who don't necessarily play video games. And indeed they did.

The Dusk Falls is an experience unlike anything you can imagine. It's a mix of games like Detroit Become Human e Ericabut with new art that stands apart from everything else on the market.

Check out our review of The Dusk Fallswhich, despite having launched directly on Xbox Game Pass in 2022 he didn't get the looks he deserved - even winning an award at The Game Awards - and now with its arrival on PlayStation, we hope that will change.

This review key was provided by INTERIOR/NIGHT in the PlayStation 5.

A story that crosses generations

The story of The Dusk Falls is set mostly in Two Rock, a small town in Arizona, and is divided into two books, which take place between 1998 and 2012.

A traveling family and a local family intertwine during an unsuccessful robbery, and you will shape the final course of this story. You must choose wisely, making the lives of each of the characters suffer the consequences of your choices.

Throughout the two books, you'll control different characters and experience different narratives, from having a toxic family, making sacrifices for love, decisions aimed at survival and more.

Replay factor lessons

Just like the games mentioned above, The Dusk Falls has a gigantic narrative tree, which allows you to play through the story several times.

Each of your moves will lead to a different outcome and you'll be able to explore the secrets behind each decision and character. What's more, some of your choices may or may not involve death.

What's more, the experience can go even further. You can connect up to eight controllers to play The Dusk Falls. Or play with up to eight friends online.

What's more, if you're a content creator, there's an in-game streamer mode where your viewers can help you make decisions.

The Dusk Falls has an unquestionable art style

At first, I confess I was shocked. What I saw on my screen was something I hadn't seen before, and I didn't think it would work.

But to my surprise, I was completely wrong. The art style of The Dusk Falls is completely unquestionable, and extremely competent.

The Dusk Falls places real actors rendered digitally in an art style reminiscent of hand-painting. But at the same time, there are animations during the game.

While the characters move in a very "stop motionThe whole environment around you is conventionally moving. It's a shock of reality that fits as perfectly as a warm brownie with ice cream.

An accessible game for everyone

The Dusk Falls is accessible not only to any type of gamer, but to any type of person. Whether it's someone who isn't close to video games, or someone who is special.

The youtube channel INTERIOR/NIGHT has clearly gone the extra mile in this area, adding options such as menu narration, text-to-speech chat, options to increase decision times and/or quick time events and much more.

I won't go into this too much because I don't have a place to talk, but I think it's a game that anyone can play without too many problems. From casual gamers to the disabled, the visually impaired, the elderly and more.

Of course, don't put this game in the hands of your child or anyone under the age of 16. This game is certainly not for them.

Decisions that really make a difference

I've already touched on the fact that there's a gigantic narrative tree, but I need to emphasize that in As Dusk Falls your choices really do make a difference.

There are places you probably won't even go, people you won't have any kind of connection with, or lives that while for some will be spared, for others will be decimated by the assault. The Dusk Falls makes you really immersed in the decisions.

But it's worth remembering that if there's one thing you're unlikely to achieve in this game, you're unlikely to crack a smile or leave happy with your experience. The Dusk Falls is a tense game, with difficult choices that will put you on a tightrope.

What are the game's problems?

In all my six or so hours of experience, there were only two problems with the game that bothered me. The first is the audio mix.

At numerous moments the dubbing, which is in Brazilian PortugueseIt ends up disappearing altogether, or at an inaudible volume.

Now, another problem is probably a lack of communication from the studio. The game was released in July 2022, almost 2 years ago. Even so, there is still no confirmation as to whether there will be a sequel, new content or not, given that the game's ending is extremely open-ended.

Of course, the studio's communication is not a problem that impacts on the game's final score, but if you like games that have a closed ending, know that The Dusk Falls is not one of those games.

Is it worth playing?

The Dusk Falls is an experience that I didn't know I was going to have in 2024, and that I didn't think I needed. It's different from probably 95% of the games you're looking to play this year.

It's not an adventure, third-person or souls-like game. The Dusk Falls is the purest graphic novel full of drama, difficult choices and moments that could be decisive for the life of your beloved character.

An experience that allows up to eight players locally, something that is lacking on the market, apart from the possibility of multiplayer. An experience where R$ 159,90 in PSNAt a price well below market value, it will guarantee you at least 12 hours if you decide to discover everything that can happen in this rich universe.

Being the first project of the INTERIOR/NIGHT, The Dusk Falls has already won me over, and makes me look forward to any of the studio's next projects. An unforgettable experience.

The Dusk Falls is available for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 e PlayStation 5. What's more, The Dusk Falls is also available on Xbox Game Pass.
