Concord is a hero shooter that still needs a lot of tweaking - Review

concord review

Developed by Firewalk Studios and published by PlayStation, Concord is one of the games that are part of the bet for the Sony to GaaS, the well-known "games as a service", a game that is planned to last for years through updates, skins and new characters.

Concord assemble two teams of 5 players, pitting them against each other in a totally multiplayer game in space, where in some game modes you will act as a gun for hire.

Concord is a service game with a weekly progressive narrative

In Concord you will play the crew of the North Star, a group of mercenaries who are known in our galaxy as Freegunners. The Freegunners travel the stars taking on risky jobs and confronting other Freegunner crews.

With this narrative in mind, you and other players will form a team of Freegunners who will take on their rivals on a wide variety of maps and game modes in order to take home the prize.

This narrative not only serves as a backdrop, but with long cutscenes that unravel the story on a weekly basis. Each week when you open the game a new cutscene will be revealed to the player, continuing the narrative seen the previous week.

This is a different way of approaching the narrative in a multiplayer game, and one that I don't remember any other game doing quite like it. It's certainly something very original from ConcordAnd if the story is good, it can work to hook players.

Progression in Concord is simple but it works

Each Freegunner has their own skills and personalities in Concord. By using them you will unlock the level of each character, as well as unlocking new universal items by leveling up your account and completing tasks.

You can unlock a wide variety of items to customize each of your characters, as well as getting to know the people, worlds and factions of the galaxy through the Galactic Guide.

Freegunner variations are also unlocked over the course of the game, allowing the abilities of each of the 16 initial Freegunners to have different Combat Traits, better adapting them to your style of play.

Concord's contents at launch

At the moment, Concord has 16 playable characters, from light to heavy, mystics, healers, gunslingers and more. The 16 characters are combined with six PvP modes and 12 maps.

All of the game's content can be accessed for free, and over time we'll see periodic updates arriving at no extra cost. At first, these updates will add new Freegunners, variation graces, game modes, maps, worlds and weekly story scenes.

There's still a lot to improve to win over players

Founded by veterans of the Bungie e ActivisionIt was to be expected that Concord would have good points, after all, we're talking about people who have worked on games like Destiny e Call of Duty.

However, there is so much that these two franchises have done that Concord didn't even try to keep up. Especially when it comes to progression. We can see that the game innovates with the weekly story, but fails in the player's progression, after all, there's no purpose to playing.

I don't want to play just to get XP and a few skins. I'd like to play to get new weapons, equipment and even raise my prestige, just like in other FPSs.

I understand that this isn't necessarily the purpose of a hero shooter, but I felt that this game needed something to compensate for its major defects. Two defects that bothered me a lot were the fact that life doesn't regenerate itself, so you have to collect items from the scenery, but they're scarce and in bad locations.

The other flaw, and this is a crucial one, is that the maps are too big for the number of players in the match. Players are concentrated in specific areas of the map, usually in the center, and it takes a long time to get to the match.

Is Concord worth playing?

At the moment I can say that no, it's not worth playing Concord. Visually it's a very pretty game and the gunplay is very enjoyable, making for some fun matches.

However, the poor location of healers on the map (and few players using healers), the large maps for the number of players and the lack of a progression that encourages the player to stay in the game, are crucial for Concord not worth it at the moment.

The price of the game could also be a reason, after all, Overwatch is currently free. But it's understandable in a way, since we'll have free content and a story that progresses over the weeks.

At the moment Concord needs to improve to be recommended, but it is a game that has charismatic characters, good voice acting and good gunplay, and certainly with a few tweaks could become an excellent game.
