Dave the Diver has an acid humor in his narrative

During his vacation, Dave receives a call from his friend Cobra for an opportunity he can't refuse: to be part of a sushi restaurant catching fish for cooking.

The great thing about this restaurant is that it is located on the edge of the Great Blue Well, a lake which, due to mysterious properties, changes its shape with each new dive and consequently has different fish from all over the world.

After accepting the invitation, Dave discovers that he will not only be fishing, but also helping Bancho to manage the Sushi. So you have to fish to make dishes, manage the Sushi at night and discover the mysterious secrets of the well.

Gameplay for all tastes

Dave the Diver divides the gameplay into two parts, coming very close to what would be the unanimity of a good gameplay: Management and adventure with RPG elements.

During the morning and afternoon you'll be diving, hunting fish in the lake and exploring the entire Blue Well in search of weapon diagrams, photo zones, tools and much more. All this without forgetting the most important part: managing your weight, your oxygen and watching out for wild animals.

At night, you'll be totally dedicated to Bancho Sushi. You'll have to look after the evening menu, your staff, serve food and drinks, clear tables and more.

Dave the Diver's rogue-lite system

It may seem a little strange to have a rogue-lite system in a game like this, but don't worry, I'll explain it clearly.

Every time you dive, some things will be different. There will still be key locations such as the Registration Chamber and the Wreck, located on the right and left respectively. However, the entire layout of the depths will be different.

Some things, like the limestone cave, may also appear (or not) during your exploration. Some fish may not be found in the same places, but they will be in the region at the depth determined for each species.

While you dive and search for what you need in the rogue-lite system, you also need to take care of your oxygen and overload. When you run out of oxygen, you end up on the boat and lose all your items (except one of your choice).

If you get overloaded, Dave will slow down and won't be able to load new items. To avoid running out of oxygen, you can use some shells you find in the water, and to avoid "death", you can use the escape pod, which will pull you to the surface.

The center of everything is the smartphone

Dave the Diver embraces the present day with great force, and makes fun of everything humans have at their fingertips. Practically everything in the game is found on Dave's smartphone, from upgrading equipment, an Instagram-style social network, running Bancho Sushi and more.

The apps you can find on Dave's smartphone are as follows:

  • iDiver - In iDiver you can upgrade the items that Dave carries while diving, such as his air tank, diving suit, cargo chest and arbalet. These respective items allow you to go deeper into the ocean, have more oxygen time, carry more items and deal more damage to fish.
  • Cooksta - Cooksta is a social network similar to Instagram, but focused only on restaurants. Here you can check out the posts on the timeline related to Bancho Sushi and check your rank. Your rank will lead to more customers visiting the establishment and new dishes being unlocked.
  • Missions - The game's missions are divided into three categories: Main, Secondary and VIP. Secondary missions involve optional objectives, objectives that are crucial to the progress of the main missions or character sub-stories. VIP missions are related to important clients who have visited Bancho and asked for something specific. Usually it's a cooking challenge.
  • Marinca - The Marinca is something like the Pokédex, where every new fish you collect, you'll get a card indicating its size, depth and rank. Whenever you defeat a boss, you'll get a higher rank card. Each region will have a new pack of cards to collect.
  • EcoWatcher - EcoWatcher is an app that has a variety of ecological missions, and in exchange for offering fish for research and protection, you'll earn points to exchange for various rewards.
  • Minigames - Some mini-games will be unlocked throughout the story, such as one inspired by Tamagotchi, another inspired by T-Rex Running and more.
  • There will also be two other apps that you'll unlock towards the end of the campaign.

In addition to all these apps, you'll also find farm management, a seaweed farm, a horse race, a memory game and more.

The calendar is important to Dave

Following the pattern of other simulation games, the calendar will be Dave's great friend on this journey. The calendar will let you know about events taking place in your city.

The events are usually focused on specific species, such as jellyfish. At an event like this, you should prepare by getting the necessary ingredients and researching the dish at Bancho Sushi. With this, you should be able to boost your sales even more.

In addition to the events, there are also special customers who turn up at the establishment from time to time. They often set you challenges, increasing the restaurant's popularity on Cooksta and giving you some rewards.

Is Dave the Diver worth playing?

I could go on for thousands of characters highlighting and detailing everything you can find in Dave the Diverbut I don't think it will be necessary.

Dave the Diver is a game that at first glance shows great simplicity and a solid idea, but it turns out to be much more than that. This isn't just a game that throws you into the world of management and simulation. It's a game that has a deep narrative with memorable characters, plenty of activities and a campaign that is simply unforgettable.

I spent around 20 hours in the universe of Dave the DiverIf I had more free time, I'd happily spend another 20 hours. Available in the PlayStation Plusand with excellent prices on other platforms, Dave the Diver it's a game that NO ONE should miss.
