Tips for the Elden Ring

With our tips from the Elden Ring, you can face the adventure through the Midlands with more peace of mind... or less despair.

Elden Ring was released in 2022 and for a long time it was the most talked-about game out there, winning several awards for best game of the year, including The Game Awards.

Recently, the DLC 'Shadow of the Erdtree' for the game, rekindling discussion about the intriguing world of the Midlands, with its great challenges and mysteries. From Software's success with Elden Ring is so great that Shadow of the Erdtree is now the highest rated downloadable content of all time.

With so much news, videos, analysis and buzz around, you might be wondering if you're ready to take on the Midlands and become Lord Pristine. So get on your ethereal steed and check out our Elden Ring tips.

1) Start with another From game, if you can

Play some Souls/Bloodborne before playing Elden Ring: Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, Dark Souls III or Bloodborne. Remember that Sekiro is not Souls, although it can also give you a good understanding of the worlds and mechanics that Miyazaki creates.

By starting with another, smaller, more contained and potentially easier (but still challenging) game, you can get a better idea of how to play Elden Ring. But if you really want to get started and take advantage of the fact that the game is on the rise, check out our next Elden Ring tips.

2) Persevere!

That's the word for playing any Souls, and Elden Ring is no different. No boss or enemy will give you an easy time. The hard part is the beginning, always. It gets easier and easier all the time.

3) Explore, but carefully

Explore where your curiosity dictates, but only stay where your skill allows: Run away from places where enemies kill you very quickly and, in particular, where you inflict little damage. The open world of Elden Ring lets you go wherever you want, most of the time, but some places are for later. Die too easily? Does the area have formidable enemies? Then imagine the boss of the area. In other words: RUN!

4) Don't mind dying several times

Dying in Elden Ring is a game mechanic. Each death contains a learning experience. Don't worry about dying several times to the same boss. However, note whether you are evolving: with each new attempt, can you beat the boss more? Stay alive longer? Have you learned to dodge an attack that has killed you several times? That's the point.

5) Lord Pristine? Tervore? Demigods? What's up, buddy?

Don't you understand anything? Hardly anyone does. The cryptic narrative shouldn't prevent you from enjoying this game. Since Demon's Souls, FROM games have kept players intrigued by the characters, enemies and worlds created. This is a great opportunity for theories and for YouTubers who act like real detectives by making videos that are real dossiers on what we call LORE (i.e. the history of that world and its characters).

6) Learn to distribute your runes to strengthen yourself

Understand the attributes and know what you want to be: Magician or warrior? Astrologer or confessor? Choose one and realize what you're strong at and focus on that. Want to use heavy weapons? Invest in strength. Want to use lighter weapons? Invest in dexterity. Magic? Intelligence. But beware, some classes are more difficult for beginners, such as mages and spell casters in general. My tip? Start with a shield and sword character.

7) Only face what you feel comfortable facing

Escape from strong enemies or huge mobs in the open world. Your mount is your ally in these moments. Only face them if you feel very comfortable doing so.

8) Talk to the NPCs

Pay attention to the non-playable characters (NPCs)! They give you valuable tips on locations and treasures, which won't be marked on the map (most of the time)! Many of them also give you items and invisible quests.

These missions will be difficult to complete without the help of wikis and videos. Just be careful with these sources if you don't want spoilers.

9) Find the Lost Graces

Always look for a Lost Grace (bonfires), as you can travel quickly and be reborn in them, as well as being able to level up.

10) Talk about the game

Don't be shy about asking for tips from those who are playing too. Don't know which attribute to upgrade? Just ask! Talk about the game, the Souls community is wonderful!

11) Look for telescopes

Use the telescopes to see high up and far away. When you get an open world map, you can see that there are telescopes drawn on it. Go to them and see further, like a bird, and set your course!

12) Use Torrent, your mount

Mounts are not only used for traversing the map, but also for important battles. Understand your enemies, especially bosses, and face them mounted at your convenience.

13) Ignore what can be ignored

Ignore things that can be ignored if they don't interest you: "Church of the Dragon? Round Table? I want to kill enemies!" If that's what you're thinking, ignore everything that isn't essential to moving forward.

14) Be patient and learn patterns

Learn when to recover HP (life points). Watch your health and the pattern of the enemy you're facing. It's better to risk dying in that attack that will leave the enemy incapacitated for 1 or 2 seconds, so you can heal yourself, than to try to heal yourself and get hit in the head, wasting a healing item.

15) Don't rely on your shield alone

Learn to roll! Elden Ring, like all Souls, has the famous iFrames, or "invincibility frames". If you know exactly when to roll, the enemy's attack will pass you by. Especially those attacks where your shield is worthless! But watch your stamina!

16) Learn to reflect attacks

"Parrying" (reflecting an attack) is a mechanic that can save you, especially on a very difficult boss who lets you do it. However, it's quite difficult and requires much more precise timing than rolling or just defending.

17) Size is not a document

Don't be alarmed (too much) by giant enemies. There are huge enemies that are easier than a small one, as most tend to be slower.

18) Summon!

If it gets too difficult, Elden Ring has a range of summons from NPCs, friends (co-op) and others (Ashes of War). But I recommend that you exhaust all your patience before then. And defeating a boss alone in a Souls game is one of the best feelings video games can offer, but don't beat yourself up: If it's too hard, use everything the game has to offer.

19) Keep an eye on the weight of your equipment

Pay attention to your "equip burden". There is a specific attribute on the status screen. The heavier your equipment, the slower your character will roll. Note which type of game you prefer: light or heavy. Never put on more equipment than your status allows.

20) Don't give up!

Even with our Elden Ring tips, the challenge is still high and you'll have to see a lot on your own. However, remember that Elden Ring is the kind of game that will reward you for your perseverance. So DON'T GIVE UP!
