The players of Starfield began scouring planets, aggressively looking for the existence of a point of interest of the "Abandoned Research Tower", with the aim of getting easy money in Starfield.
If you land on a planet because you've found one of these towers, or if you subsequently find one while exploring, you can unlock all the planetary research data in a single instant, meaning you no longer have to scan all the plants, resources and creatures on the entire planet, which can sometimes take hours.

There are few requirements to completely scan a planet outside of certain tasks on the mission board. But those that do come up can be mind-numbing - you could be scanning for hours, trying to find the last hidden insect. Or, discovering that what you're looking for is in the depths of an acid ocean.
So, if you're lucky enough to find an Abandoned Research Tower, you can bypass this laborious and often lethal task by entering, downloading the data and sailing to the nearest spaceport to sell this information for thousands of credits.
