MLB The Show 24 knows how to embrace new players

From great baseball fans who are distant from video games, to great players who have little knowledge of the sport, MLB The Show 24 has an excellent learning curve.

Just like other sports games, MLB The Show 24 has a number of difficulty options, including Beginner, Amateur, Minors, Rookie, Novice, Veteran, All-Star, Hall of Fame and Legend.

If you don't know exactly which difficulty to choose, you can also activate the dynamic difficulty, which will increase or decrease the difficulty depending on your achievements.

Numerous gameplay options

Something that surprised me positively is the variety of gameplay options the game offers the player.

You can, for example, change the style of the shot by choosing from options such as pulsing, "drawing with the analog stick", clicking at the right time and more.

The same goes for baserunningyou can choose between controlling with the analog, buttons or automatic and the hitter.

These options basically turn the game into something else. It's almost as if you had the option of changing the way penalties and free-kicks are taken in the game. EA Sports FC, putting it in the style of old games.

This way, the learning curve is much shorter, as players can choose the style that best suits them.

The structure of the game

The structure of the MLB The Show 24 follows a lot of what other sports games have been doing in the industry, and a lot of it was built by FIFA.

There are a total of five game modes:

  • Road to the Show - The Road to the Show mode allows you to create your player and chart your path in the sport. The mode is very similar to NBA 2K.
  • Diamond Dynasty - This mode allows you to create and customize your team and compete online. Something like Ultimate Team, but with many more functions, such as creating the uniform, shield and more.
  • March to October - The March to October mode is a simplified "Franchise" mode that places you at key moments in matches.
  • Franchise - This mode is very similar to EA Sports FC Manager, but with the difference that you can even manage your team's sponsors.
  • Storylines - Finally, the Storylines mode allows you to experience and recreate the most iconic games in baseball history. A real treat for fans!

Which mode of MLB The Show 24 did I play the most?

As I usually do in other games, the mode I played the most in MLB The Show 24 was Franchise, which is similar to MyGM and Manager.

I chose the three-star complexity level, which makes you handle transactions, contracts and more. However, you can lower the complexity of the game at any time.

You could just be the club's scout, for example, or you could just look after injuries, lineups and team rotation.

But despite this, I ended up testing the other modes that MLB The Show offers, such as Road to the Show e Diamond Dynasty.

What did I think of Road to the Show and Diamond Dynasty?

Despite some limitations, Road to the Show mode is very similar to MyCarreer from NBA 2Ksomething that really pleased me.

The game works in a kind of story-driven fashion, taking you through various cutscenes, dialog choices, career progression and more. However, it abandons what NBA 2K does, placing you in a city, with stores and more.

Diamond Dynasty mode, on the other hand, follows an extremely similar structure to Ultimate Team, but I didn't like it as much. I felt that the level of gameplay was too high, not to mention the fact that there was a long delay in playing due to the server.

But, given what Diamond Dynasty offers, it's a great certainty that Ultimate Team fans would adapt perfectly. Whereas Road to the Show might be a bit "8 or 80" for MyCarreer players, even though there are a lot of similarities.

All in all, these are two excellent modes that are well polished and don't lack so many features. We should always remember that not everything needs to be identical to the competition, but to follow your own ideas.

How difficult was it to learn the rules?

If there's one thing I don't have to hide, it's that I really didn't understand the sport at all. Once I had the game in hand, I watched some videos to understand the rules and how the sport works.

I watched about four or five videos, and also exchanged some ideas with a friend who also has the game in hand, and everything became very clear. It's a sport that, although it seems simple and complex, there's also a logical and summarized explanation of how it works.

Just as you can summarize that soccer is basically putting the ball in the opponent's net, it's self-understanding that you just have to cover all the bases with a player from your team and you'll score.

I'm not going to go into this in depth because I'm not really the right person to explain the sport, but if you have any doubts about whether you'll be able to understand the game or not, you should know that if you watch about half an hour of some "tutorial" videos on the sport, you'll get the hang of it.

Is it worth playing?

I was positively surprised by MLB The Show 24. Considering the infinite number of buttons and movements in other sports games, and the lack of a good tutorial, MLB The Show 24 is way ahead in these areas.

What's more, there are countless options for difficulty and game modes, which are apparently always treated with great care year after year.

If you are a Xbox Game Pass know that MLB The Show 24 will be available on the service on March 19, 2024.
