On Tuesday (27) we heard the sad news that the Sony is laying off 900 employees from its PlayStation. These layoffs include the closure of London Studioand reducing the Firesprite, Naughty Dog, Guerilla, Insomniac and more.
To make the news even more chaotic and sad, the revival of Twisted Metal, which was classified as a service game, was also canceled by PlayStation, even after the success of the series.
New Twisted Metal is canceled
According to an update from Jason Schreier, from Bloomberga live-service game based on Twisted Metal had been in development for some time before it was caught up in the cancellations.
Twisted Metal hasn't seen a game released since the reboot of the franchise in 2012. In more recent media, the game had a TV adaptation made for the streaming service Peacockand has been announced for a 2nd season back on the The Game Awards in December.
In a memo to the team, according to the Bloomberg, the head of the PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulstacknowledged the cancellations of games throughout the company.
"Sometimes great ideas don't become great games," he said. "Sometimes a project is started with the best intentions before changes in the market or industry result in a change of plan."
With regard to these cancellations, the PlayStation has canceled several service games in the last year, including one based on The Last of Us and another in the Spider-Verse.
