Outcast: A New Beginning resumes the franchise in stunning fashion but falls short of the mark - Review

outcast a new beginning review

After 20 years, the series Outcast finally returned to the spotlight with Outcast: A New Beginning, a game that was originally a sequel to the 1999 original, but ended up being a new beginning for Cutter Slade, "A New Beginning".

In Outcast: A New BeginningYou control Cutter Slade on the alien planet of Adelpha. The game begins shortly after the powerful Yods reappear, causing him to discover that the Talans have been enslaved, natural resources have run out and his past is linked to the robotic invasion.

Before we start our review, we'd like to thank THQ Nordic for sending us a review key of Outcast: A New Beginning to PlayStation 5, and, of course, trust in our work.

Outcast: A New Beginning and its almost original structure

Just like the original game already did, Outcast: A New Beginning explores an open, non-linear world. You have the option of choosing when and how to proceed.

However, there is one particularity that makes it different from other games: the structure of the missions. Here, the main missions have a few "forks", making you complete others, until you finish your main objective. In general, you pursue objectives that aren't as in-depth, but which may be desirable due to Adelpha's beautiful landscapes.

With this mission system, it's common for your main objective to be overlooked, and it's only possible to find out what's needed after completing the divisions, which are not secondary objectives, but which don't carry the same narrative weight as the main missions.

Cutter Slade is not the same from start to finish

Developing Cutter Slade will be indispensable for your journey in Adelpha. There are no level numbers or damage to missions and enemies, but there are modules for your weapons and skills for Slade that will certainly change the way you approach missions.

Weapons, for example, have the power to equip modules. Modules add new qualities to Slade's weapon and modify its initial attributes.

When it comes to the character, there are a wide variety of skills. In it you can upgrade your Propulsion Backpack - which allows you to double jump, glide, fly across the map and more - and Slade's combat skills.

The tribes of Adelpha are relevant in Outcast: A New Beginning

If there's one thing Outcast What really caught my attention was Slade's relationship with the inhabitants of each of the villages in the game. It reminded me a lot of Horizon Forbidden West, exclusive game of PlayStation 4 e PlayStation 5 and arriving later this week for PC.

Each group has its own particularities, ranging from traditions to distinct lifestyles. In each of these locations, you'll find Daokas, fast travel points that will be very useful during your journey to Adelpha.

Carrying out main and secondary missions for the most varied characters in the villages will make Slade more and more trustworthy, and will grant him some items and resources.

A fun game, but lacking in quality.

A New BeginningAlthough it shares similarities, it doesn't borrow too much from other games of the same genre on the market. It tries to adapt everything in its own way, providing a unique experience. However, when faced with the game's impressive wild landscapes and diverse tribes, it's inevitable not to be reminded of Horizon Forbidden West.

Although the combat is uneven, it is very interactive. The changes to the weapons, along with their skill trees, add an extra touch to the game. Now, when it comes to the narrative, there's a big problem.

The game's visuals aren't bad, but there's a big problem with the facial expressions. It's not just the characters around you, but also the protagonist. Most of the time, the expressions are static.

The structure of the missions can be an aspect that can annoy many players, due to its repetition and dynamics. After all, it's not very different from what 90% games already do: go from point A to point B to find a piece of information or an object.

If we consider the amount that is charged for the game in the PSN, does not match what the game offers the player. You'll definitely have to wait for an offer of at least 50% off or more to buy it Outcast: A New Beginning.

Despite this, it's exciting to see the franchise making a comeback. Especially considering that the original team is working together with the legendary composer Lennie Moore.

Oucast: A New Beginning is now available for PC, PlayStation 5 e Xbox Series. Once again, thank you for the review key of Outcast: A New Beginning sent by THQ Nordic.
