Over the last two years, Palia has had numerous alpha stress tests to gauge interest in the game and how well the servers work with lots of people online.
With the closed beta starting today (08/02) and an open beta to come, even more people are eager to jump in and start their relaxing journeys in the game.

Will the progress of the Palia Beta be lost?
In summary, if you played during the closed Alpha stress tests, your progress will not be transferred to the beta. However, your closed and open beta progression will continue until the game's full release.
That said, any skills you level up, missions you complete and everything else you accomplish will be transferred, allowing you to spend as long as you want playing without worrying about more resets.
What's more, if you've played Alpha and bought cosmetics, these will be converted into coins Palia and returned to you. By the way, you'll also receive a 20% bonus as a thank you gift!
