Remnant 2 - Review

Remnant 2 Review

It is a sequel to Remnant: From the Ashes, and is part of the Chronos: Before the Ashes universe. Remnant 2 is developed by Gunfire Games, published by Gearbox and arrived on July 25 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

In Remnant 2, players take on the role of the last remnants of humanity, facing terrifying forces of evil. The game offers cooperative survival gameplay with new hidden worlds that are full of surprises and deadly encounters.

Players can join the battle to save humanity in a dynamically generated world with branching quest lines, unique loot and challenging odds, encouraging exploration and the option to play alone or in three-person co-op.

An enhanced experience with a breathtaking procedural world

Separated into worlds that can be accessed via a crystal at their "base", Remnant 2's maps are all procedurally generated, including their order.

After starting your journey in Remnant 2, the game will transport you to a world as a result of the story, but with each new character, that initial world can be completely different.

Although the procedural world is very consistent and doesn't generate bad or repetitive models, each run the NPCs and secondary missions will be randomized within the maps. So it's not always possible to follow a guide to understand where each thing is.

This is a feature that was already in the first game, but now, everything is of an even higher quality due to the layouts of the maps, the enemies that stand in your way, and the way the story is told.

A souls-like RPG and third-person shooter

The souls-like genre defined a generation of consoles, bringing great IPs such as The Surge, Bloodborne, Ashen and even Remnant. Meanwhile, Remnant is one of the games that has managed to differentiate itself in the market.

Just like in the FromSoftwareDuring character creation, you can select your class, which are called Archetypes. Initially, there are four options available, each with its own skills and playing style. However, a fifth archetype can be unlocked as you play.

Each archetype has its own peculiarities, but over time you can combine your archetypes with others to create a unique style of play.

Not to mention that they are completely flexible, allowing you to use any kind of weapons, armor, rings and talismans. It's worth noting that, of course, there are some items that are specific to each archetype.

Unfortunately, the loot is completely non-existent

Something that I find a little frustrating is the loot system. The loot in Remnant 2 is something that is completely non-existent.

Unlike many other games in the souls-like or looter shooter genres, the enemies won't drop items for you, and you won't have to find them frequently on the maps.

In fact, you'll often go back and forth to your base to improve your equipment with the various NPCs there, and you can even buy new weapons, armor, mods, items, talismans and more.

It's a system that works very well for the game, but still leaves you wanting more for the loot. Something that can make this indignation even more explicit is that I went from start to finish with the same equipment. I just kept upgrading them with the NPCs at the base.

The bosses in Remnant 2 are like an opera concert

Something we need to point out is that in Remnant 2 the fights are like a dance, and the bosses like an opera concert.

With each new battle, I put my headset on at a considerable volume, so that I was able to play with my eyes closed, listening and anticipating every move.

Although I had some difficulty with the last boss of the game. Which, by the way, I believe to be the best boss battle I've ever had in a game. This theory still applies easily. All movements are indicated by sound signals, and without them, it will be much more difficult to fight.

You can apply this theory to another opportune moment, which is in the world of the Labyrinth. This is a boss that is more logical than challenging. And, in fact, the battle is like a dance, and the sound effects are like its conductor.

This detail is something I really needed to emphasize, because if there's one thing that Remnant 2 did very well, were the boss battles special and memorable.

Unfortunately, it's not all flowers

Of course, it's not all flowers. There are some problems with Remnant 2, and they really need to be clarified here.

I'm writing this two days after the official launch of the game, and matchmaking on PlayStation 5 is still having problems. I tried to connect with a friend to fight a boss together, and it wasn't possible.

Character creation is also something that falls short, where despite the quality of the characters being excellent, you see a low range of options for hairstyles, faces and little possibility of customization.

Nevertheless, Remnant 2 brings a unique and original experience in a souls-like genre mixed with a TPS. Despite the great difficulty of the final battle, this could be a good entry point into the genre.

Remnant 2 is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series PC. The review key was provided by Gearbox in the PlayStation 5.
