The setting and plot of Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin is set in the middle of the 19th century, during the Bakumatsu, the last years of the Edo period, and takes players to visit the most important points in history, taking place in the cities of Yokohama, Edo and Kyoto.

The game depicts the Boshin War between the Tokugawa Shogunate and various anti-Shogunate factions who were unhappy with the influence of the West after Japan forcibly opened its ports.

Along the lines of Team Ninja, but even better

Just as happened in NiOh 2 e Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Rise of the Ronin allows you to create your own character in a vast creator.

You'll have a wide range of customization options, from gender, face, hair, facial hair, make-up, tattoos, voice and more. And the customization of your character doesn't stop there.

You can also upgrade your character in a large skill tree, divided into four characteristics: Strength, Intellect, Dexterity and Charm.

Not to mention that your Ronin also has a Sword Sharpening Origin, where you can choose between Assassin, Decimator, Seducer, Saboteur, Beginner and Unsharpened. This origin will alter the character's initial attributes, as well as making it easier for the character to use certain weapons.

A true story shaped in your own way

As mentioned above, Rise of the Ronin depicts a real story from 19th century Japan, the Bakumatsu. However, it doesn't take everything literally, allowing you to shape the story in your own way.

The game presents story choices at numerous key moments, allowing you to ally with or fight against several of the characters who were important in the real world. Making these choices, usually between pro- or anti-xogunate, will affect the plot.

Allies and romantic pairs

Not only the main content of Rise of the Ronin allows the story to be modified, but also the optional content, which in a way has an impact on the course of the story.

In Rise of the Ronin there are more than 50 link missions, in which you can become good friends with important characters, or even have a relationship with them.

To do this, you have to complete the link missions for the respective characters, as well as taking them on missions with you, chatting in the lodge and exchanging gifts. Rise of the Ronin is more than an open-world adventure game.

The open world of Rise of the Ronin

Before its launch, much was compared with Ghost of Tsushima and especially with the games in the RPG saga of Assassin's CreedIn a way, it's very similar, but with its own peculiarities.

Rise of the Ronin is divided between three maps, the cities of Yokohama, Edo and Kyoto. There is a lot of optional content in addition to Ronin's missions.

We'll have link missions, lost cats, chests, banners, shooting ranges on foot and horseback, hang gliding challenges, dojos to train your fighting styles, public order disturbances, photo challenges, odd or even minigames and more.

As well as having a wide variety of objectives to complete, it doesn't give you everything straight away, as the map is largely blank, with only the banners showing. As you raise the banners, the objectives for that region gradually appear.

How accessible is the game?

One of the players' biggest concerns was how accessible it would be Rise of the RoninSince it is a game developed by a studio that is currently an expert in Souls-Like.

Difficulty options

Well, starting with the difficulty options: At first, you can choose between three difficulties, these being Dawn, Dusk e Twilight. After finishing the game, you can also choose the difficulty Midnight. Just like the games in the Assassin's Creed for example, you'll be able to change the difficulty at any time.

Accessibility options

When it comes to accessibility options, there are countless. You can change options between hold or press, button hold time, analog flip, automatic additional attacks, aim assist, automatic grab, subtitle size, closed captions, blood effects and more.

The difficulty of Rise of the Ronin

A big highlight is also the number of items you earn during combats and missions, as well as the possibility of buying better items and upgrading the ones you already have. Not to mention the numerous optional missions available on the map, which will help you level up.

Finally, despite Rise of the Ronin The game has very challenging combat based on the timing of the parry, but it's not as difficult as the studio's other games. Most of the time you can be very aggressive when pressing the square, so be sure to dodge or use the counterfulgor (the parry).

The great controversy of Rise of the Ronin

After the game's release, a great deal of controversy began to circulate on social media, with many believing that Rise of the Ronin was an ugly game. Well, that's quite a controversial subject, to be honest.

Rise of the Ronin has many stunning landscapes, exceptional cinematographic quality and great care taken with the look of each of its characters.

However, when it comes to the open world in general, the graphics end up falling well short of what the PlayStation 5 can offer. The problem isn't exactly the textures or details of the world, but the serrations and pop-ins that occur with great frequency.

So make no mistake, Rise of the Ronin is not an ugly game, quite the opposite. Its main problem is that it has technical problems on the visual side, which may well be corrected in future patches. But, of course, it's a Team Ninja for the launch of the game.

It's not all flowers at Bakumatsu

Amid countless twists and turns, betrayals, relationships and unbridled combat, Rise of the Ronin ends up leaving the impression that it could have been an even better game.

While the map is much smaller than most of the games that are currently being released and with much more content, the visuals in general fall well short of the technical side of things.

The game's optimization isn't the best, since even in performance mode we can encounter some FPS drops during our journey through 19th century Japan.

But the game's biggest negative is that although you can choose the male or female voice and the tone of it for your character, in my 33-hour journey I must have been able to count on one hand the number of times I heard it.

Taking into account Assassin's Creed Odyssey e Valhallafor example, where every choice you make your character will respond, it's not the same as in Ronin. You will only hear your character speak in cinematics that detail important moments in the story.

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is what bothered me most about the whole journey. Although I understood that I was the salvation of Japan at the time, at the same time my character had no personality. He was charismatic and responsible in his decisions, but he didn't express them.

Is Rise of the Ronin worth playing?

That's an answer I definitely don't need to go into. Rise of the Ronin is the best experience I've had in 2024 so far.

In the midst of so many comparisons, Rise of the Ronin is the game that most appealed to me in terms of its story, open world and character development. There are so many things to do, and so many things that manage to give you a feeling of importance.

You can find some repetitive things, like the characters who ask you for help on the map. But even so, with the help of the unbridled combat of the Team NinjaThe whole thing is very enjoyable.
