Star Trucker is extremely original but far from perfect - Review

star trucker review

After years of playing games like Euro Truck Simulator e American Truck Simulator with my friends I never imagined that I would even see a new game in the genre that brought something different, but the Monster and Monster surprised with Star Trucker.

As far as we know, the Monster and Monster previously only acted as a support studio and developed mobile games. Star Trucker the studio's first large-scale game.

Check out our review of Star Trucker and where the game gets it right, and where it gets it wrong.

A different premise but very close to what we already know

The idea is nothing different from what we've already seen in ETS2 e ATS. You have to get into your truck, pick up loads and make deliveries, all in the midst of long journeys where you must always keep an eye on your fuel and, of course, the damage to the vehicle.

The great innovation is that it all takes place in space, with a jet truck and a different approach, very reminiscent of a game with RPG features, as well as some dialog options that can be heard and answered via your PX radio.

Star Trucker has a slightly more complex management system

Simulators always have some kind of management, but Star Trucker is certainly the most complex in this respect, and has the longest learning curve.

Here you need to always check that the main systems are switched on, such as the gravity compensator, the charger for your spacesuit and more. Also, take care of your truck's hull, because if it's damaged there could be an oxygen leak.

If this happens, you will pass out after a certain time. Alternatively, you'll have to pick up your suit and get out of the truck to repair it. It's also important to ensure that you have a reserve of fuel and the energy levels of each module, so that you can make the hyper-jumps between distant cities on the galactic map.

A small studio with a lot of ambition

Star Trucker has a lot of ambition in everything he tries - and for the most part it succeeds - do, and this becomes even clearer when you understand that the Monster and Monster is a just two people.

They are two developers with a passion for science fiction who have managed to build an incredible universe, both in terms of visuals and the variety of mechanics present in the game.

Of course, this becomes clear when we look at the game's problems. Within a few hours you start to find things a little too repetitive, especially when it comes to the game's dialogues.

After all, why do you have to go from point A to point B, and from B to C to talk to other NPCs, when you don't meet them in person, and always only talk on radios?

Or worse, every trip you make, you have to make a hyper-jump. Of course, this is a way of saying that everything is too far away, but the game's map is very small compared to others in the genre. I think there could be fewer places, but with them being much bigger.

Is Star Trucker worth playing?

Star Trucker is an innovative experience that offers a new twist on the cargo delivery genre, especially at a time when there are no new big games in the genre.

It's not a perfect game, and it has many flaws, the biggest of which is its repetitiveness. However, it's a game that catches your eye from the first hyper-jump and the moments when you have to manage your truck.

Driving the truck in space is also a completely different experience, especially when you get to the hardest part: parking it.

It's a game that any fan of ETS2 will love, but don't think you'll spend many, many hours trapped in this universe, at least not now, shortly after its release.

Star Trucker is available for PC and Xbox Series.
