Starfield cost more than US$ 200 million

Starfield, the star game of the Bethesdaafter being in development for eight long years, will finally be released at the end of this week (pre-release).

Over the last week or two, we've seen some playtesters leaking parts of the game. And while it sounds incredible, it hasn't come without a high price. Reports have concluded that the Bethesda spent almost US$ 200 million on the game, which is almost the same budget that Elden Ring (GOTY 2022) spent.

It encompasses thousands of planets, stars and interstellar space exploration, so it's no wonder that a lot of resources are needed. For a rough estimate, the team at Starfield is made up of almost 500 employees.

The cost of developing Starfield is impressive

Starfield is being developed at Creation Engine 2which is apparently one of the most powerful game engines in existence. What's more, the game is marketed as a "next-generation RPG", which surely means that the game also needs to be visually appealing to a wider audience. So it's no surprise that a bigger budget was expected.

Even so, it is much less than what the Rockstar spent on Red Dead Redemption 2 - a staggering US$ 540 million! It's only a matter of days now that we can tell whether all those resources have been well spent, or a hype train wreck.

Starfield will be available for pre-release on August 31, 2023 and will be released for Xbox Series X/S e PC on September 6, 2023. It will be available at Xbox Game Pass on the first day.
