Suicide Squad is for open-minded gamers - Review

suicide squad review

Developed by Rocksteadythe brilliant minds behind the franchise Batman: Arkham, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is the new game from the studio, which hasn't released anything new for at least 9 years, when its last game (Arkham Knight) was launched.

Different from the investigative approach of the Bat Games, Suicide Squad puts players in the middle of chaos with gunfire, explosions and the imbecility of Task Force-X.

First of all, we need to inform you that this review was made possible by a advance key sent by Nuuvem Brazil. And then Warner Bros. sent us a second key, which we used to supplement the text with an entire section on the game's cooperative mode.

That said, check out this spoiler-free review of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

A complicated task for Task Force X

The Squad composed of the infamous members Harlequin, Gunslinger, Captain Boomerang e King Shark must fulfill an impossible mission: Kill the Justice League, who are now terrorizing the citizens after being corrupted by Brainiac, who has invaded Metropolis.

To do this, Amanda Waller, a high-ranking U.S. government official and director of A.R.G.U.S., implants lethal explosives in the heads of each of the villains, taking away the group's choice not to join Task Force X.

It may seem like a misguided choice on Waller's part, but the unique characteristics and insanity of each of the characters means that Metropolis could have a future again.

It's hard to choose just one villain from Suicide Squad

At first, the game puts players through a tutorial to explain the combat and traversal methods of each of the characters in the game. Suicide Squad. But even though I had decided who I was going to play with before I started, it didn't quite work out that way as the game went on.

The Clown Princess of Crime, HarlequinShe is the most acrobatic of the group, as she has a mechanical claw that she uses to go over the edge of buildings and swing herself around on the Bat-Drone. Both technologies were stolen from Batman in the Hall of Justice. The character also uses pistols, SMGs, heavy weapons, a hammer and her iconic baseball bat.

Floyd Lawton, o GunslingerThey move around using a Jet Pack and have a Pulse Cannon as their main weapon. They can also use pistols, rifles and shotguns as a second option.

The most comical character in the group, Digger Harkness, o Captain BoomerangHe is equipped with his iconic Boomerang, as well as shotguns, SMGs and rifles. As a gadget, he uses the speed force gauntlet stolen from the Flash.

Last but not least, the demigod Nanaue moves with a charged leap that can reach great heights, as well as using a kind of double scythe, shotguns, rifles and heavy weapons like miniguns. A tank in its own right!

Each of these characters can be chosen at any time (except during combat) and has an independent skill tree, equipment, levels and visuals.

In order, the characters are voiced by Rebeca Zadra, César Emilio, André Sauer e Junior Nannetti.

Are these the only characters in Suicide Squad?

At launch, you'll only be able to play with these four characters. But after launch, new playable characters will be added at no extra cost.

One character has already been confirmed, the Joker from Elseworlds. We'll talk more about this type of content and what it will add to the game, as well as a new playable character, in the next few posts.

The nostalgic will be heartbroken

Before you fall headlong into Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League you need to understand only one thing: The game is about killing the Justice League.

I understand how painful it is for you to kill Batman of the franchise Batman: Arkhamwhere you've seen the character built up over the years in four excellent games (three of them from Rocksteady). But the reality is that cycles end, and although the Batman cycle ended in Arkham Knight, a Rocksteady decided to bring him to "the last dance".

This game is definitely not for the nostalgic. Everything in this game is for an audience that may not be the same as the franchise's audience Batman: Arkham, who has now grown old (no offense).

Suicide Squad embrace the chaos (in the best Sunset Overdrive style), the GAAS (in the best Fortnite style, at no extra cost - except skins) and courage. Yes, it's courageous to put the four villains in charge of the good guys, eliminating all the Justice League.

Yes, it's hard to build a franchise that takes place entirely at night, with a gothic and investigative feel, and put four colorful characters jumping around the city and killing corrupted civilians.

But one thing is certain: The Rocksteady is fully aware that she killed Justice League. So she must already have ideas in hand for the next projects in the same universe.

It may not look like it, but the gameplay is extremely polished

At first, fans of Rocksteady may have been startled to see that Suicide Squad would be of four characters jumping around Metropolis while exchanging gunfire and shooting at "purple blobs".

But, incredible as it may seem, the gameplay of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is extremely polished. Everything works very well.

Each character has a variety of weapons and individual skills to master, allowing builds to be adapted to the user's specific style of play. You can build for short range, long range or a mixture of the two.

As for the "purple bubbles", I can say that they've managed to balance this very well compared to what was previously seen in the initial gameplays. It appears on some specific enemies, and on tanks and helicopters. It works more or less like a weak point for the enemy.

Rocksteady got the progression right

Unlike most players, I always like to do the secondary content last, after all, it's optional. As I always do all the story content first, it often happens that I need to stop to improve my characters.

Fortunately, Suicide Squad doesn't stop the player from progressing through the story if they don't level up. There are a few moments in the game when you have to do some secondary tasks, but these are for character and mission style introductions, such as escorting a vehicle or a person.

The skill tree, attributes and wide variety of weapons also make it interesting to carry out other types of tasks. However, it's worth noting that as far as secondary content goes, there isn't much story involved.

Co-op is more complete than it looks

As I said at the beginning of the text, I ended up starting and playing alone, as we received a key in advance from Nuuvem. However, since we received a key from Warner Later on, we were able to tackle the cooperative as well.

The cooperative mode with up to 3 other players is released about 30-40 minutes into the game, right after you descend into the Hall of Justice. When you get there, you can invite your friends. In my case, it was just me and Pedro, and it was at this point that we began to see the depth of the co-op.

As well as cross-play, the game allows more than one character to be repeated, so you can have four Harlequins, for example, but it's not ideal. As each character has their own characteristics, not only in terms of mobility, but also in terms of attack, it's essential that everyone uses different characters. And that's where the trick lies.

As only Pedro and I were playing, there were two bots available. The game assigned a bot to me and another bot to Pedro. In this case, I chose the King Shark for my bot, and he chose Harlequin. I had earned some skills and weapons for my King Shark in solo mode, and all of this transferred to our co-op section. The same went for his Harlequin, who also added to the gameplay.

Another highlight of the cooperative mode is that all progress, XP and rewards are saved regardless of how they are earned. So, if I eliminate fewer enemies than him, I'll level up more slowly. But when I go back to solo mode, my character will still have everything I received in that session.

An extra incentive to play co-op

If you decide to play a few story missions with a friend and then go back to the ground, your progress is also maintained. The same goes for collectibles, for example.

There is also an incentive system for completing objectives. Players who focus more on objectives and enemies will earn more points on a squad leaderboard. The winner of that particular mission will become the squad leader and can choose the next activity.

You can also use emotes to tease or thank your friends. A fun system is that, when you pass Pedro in the score of an activity, I've made a taunt that will appear to him the next time he enters the game.

I can confirm one thing: It's totally possible to play without any friends. I did the entire main story on my own, and I didn't miss it. The characters talk to each other and the AI is very intelligent when it comes to helping you with enemies or opening doors.

So don't worry, if you don't have any friends who own the game, you'll still experience a fun adventure.

Is the endgame content good?

Most open-world games have endgame content, which is reflected in side quests, collectibles, secrets and more. In the case of Suicide SquadAfter you finish the main campaign, the game will introduce the "Finite Crisis".

Finite Crisis" sets players out to save Alternate Earths from Brainiac's evil, also allowing them to equip the Squad with better gear and face even greater challenges in the more difficult Mastery Ranks and Invasion Levels.

There will also be some mastery challenges, infamous equipment, horde survival mode, mutators, mastery levels (after reaching the maximum level of each character), incursion missions and support squad missions.

Yes, there's a lot to do already at launch, and as time goes on, there will certainly be more.

Post-launch content

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will offer seasonal content at no extra cost to players. There will be new playable characters, missions, equipment, weapons and much more. Completely free, except for the skins.

According to RocksteadyThe theme of each season will be a different character from the DCand incorporating alternative realities that have also been invaded by other Brainiac variants.

Already confirmed for March is the arrival of the Clown King of Crime, Joker, who will come from an Alternative Earth with a rocket-powered umbrella to launch himself into the air and surf the rooftops.

You'll not only be able to complete the new missions with the Joker, but also replay the entire story with the character in your squad. There will also be the arrival of the "Episode Rank", a leveling system to unlock combat items and extra missions.

The youtube channel Rocksteady also said that between seasons 2 and 4 we will also see three new playable characters, three new playable environments, new weapons and equipment, activities and more.

Is it worth playing?

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a game that ended up surprising me positively. Especially when you consider that even before its release, fans of the Arkham franchise were already against the game.

During my almost 14 hours of gameplay, I was caught laughing, concentrating on frantic gunfights and amazed at the dangerous narrative choices of the Rocksteady. If you're a fan of good narrative and hero games, this is the game for you.

The universe created by Rocksteady has only expanded further with this addition, and you can be sure that there are good cards up the studio's sleeves, as the game's events are unlikely to end this way according to subtle hints throughout the story.

In a nutshell, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is available for PC, PlayStation 5 e Xbox Series X/S. You can buy your copy at Nuuvem by clicking here!
