Middle-earth comes to Magic: The Gathering

MagicCon brought thousands of fans to the Minneapolis Convention Center in the United States and, during the three-day event, visitors were able to play many hours of Magic and learn about several new features of the game. Experts from Wizards of the Coast and the community took the opportunity to reveal details about as yet unreleased collections from the Universes Beyond series, such as The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™ and Doctor Who. In addition, attendees got a first-hand look at the Commander Masters set and a preview of the upcoming release of Eldraine's Wild Lands.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle-earth (release June 23)

The Ring tempts you

Just like in J.R.R. Tolkien's stories, the Ring will call out to players and several cards in the set will have abilities that say "The Ring tempts you".

The first time the Ring tempts a player during the game, he will receive a badge called "The Ring", and a printed card can be kept in the command zone as a reminder that that player possesses this differential - and what it does.

Every time the Ring tempts the player, two things happen. First, he has to choose a creature under his control to be the Ring bearer. Then, the Ring gains the next ability, if it can. The Ring will reach its maximum power when it has accumulated four of these abilities.

Being a Ringbearer will also give specific abilities to some cards, such as Sauron, the Necromancer. If Sauron is the Ringbearer, his created tokens don't have to be exiled.

Bilbo's birthday party

Another part of the exciting MTG release will be the special cards that, when put together, form a scene or action from the books. At MagicCon: Minneapolis, fans were able to see one of these scenes, which was Bilbo's birthday party.

This scene is made up of six cards, each with its own powers and abilities. When put together, the artwork shows the fireworks that surprised the hobbits on Bilbo's "eleventy-first" birthday. The cards that make up the scene are Bilbo, Retired Burglar; Frodo Baggins; Gandalf, Friend of the Shire; Wizard's Rockets; Delighted Halfling and Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. These cards will be available in the pre-release kit and Collector's Boosters.

Doctor Who (launch on October 13th)

Players can gather their companions and get ready to experience the Doctor's adventures in Magic: The Gathering - Doctor Who!

In partnership with BBC Studios, Magic: The Gathering can't wait to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who with four new Commander decks ready to play that allow you to recreate favorite Doctor Who moments. Just like the Doctor, the player will have the opportunity to outwit their opponents and encounter well-known characters, villains, locations and events from the series. Magic fans and Whovians (as Doctor Who fans are called) will have plenty of reasons to love this collection.

These Commander decks are built around the classic Doctors: the ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth, as well as the villains from the series. Each deck has 50 new cards and a brand new Planechaser set with famous places from the Whoverse - so the player can travel the universe with their favorite Doctors and companions.

Basic terrain cards in this set will also have a visual surprise, as the TARDIS [ship from the Doctor Who series] travels through all five types of terrain.

Commander Masters (release on August 4th)

Commander Masters will create a fun dynamic and make Commander decks even more powerful. Four decks will have ten new cards in each 100-card Commander pack, with new commanders for colorless, white-black-green, white-blue-red and white-blue-black-red-green decks.

Wild Lands of Eldraine (release on September 8th)

Three years ago, Magic visited the realm of knights and fairytale characters with Eldraine's Throne. But like any good fairy tale, there's always something more to the story.

On September 8, players will go beyond the castle walls and enter a fantastic region with the collection Wild Lands of Eldraine, an adventure that will explore all the mystery and extent of this plane. It will also be the first contact with the Multiverse after the Phyrexian invasion. Familiar faces and new ones will be included in the collection, still dealing with the consequences of the conflict.

Secret Lair X From Cute to Brute (now available for

Secret Lair returns to the Commander format with the new "From Cute to Brute" deck, which puts even more fun into double-sided cards, including the Commander.

"From Cute to Brute" is a complete deck of 100 ready-to-play cards that includes five double-sided foils with artwork created by Nana Qi on the front and by GODMACHINE on the back.
