It seems that what was hitherto known as Project Rene, The Sims 5, has been canceled. This information would have been seen on the LinkedIn from a former developer of Maxis and internet detectives have uncovered more evidence that The Sims 5 no longer exists.

The profile in question was first seen by the X user @SimmerBerkay, who chose not to reveal who the profile belonged to, but shared screenshots of it revealing that the unidentified developer was working on The Sims 5 for PS5 until it was canceled.

Some people claim that the profile belonged to a Thomas Sincich who left the Maxis in April 2024, but in his LinkedIn at the time of writing, there is no mention of the Maxis nowhere.

Several Maxis employees have stopped working on The Sims 5, indicating that the game has been canceled

This is where things get interesting, however. Since then, fans have discovered that several employees of the Maxis were fired by Electronic Arts around April 2024, while others have updated their profiles to indicate that they have stopped working on the Project Rene and returned to The Sims 4.

There is some speculation that Project Rene e The Sims 5 were two different games, but given that people seem to have come back from the Project Rene to Sims 4 at the same time that Sincich supposedly left the Maxis claiming that The Sims 5 has been canceled, we're leaning towards both being the same thing.

One of the screenshots supposedly from the profile of Sincich can be seen below, courtesy of SimmerBerkay.

It is worth noting that @SimmerBerkay indicates that, in his opinion, The Sims 5 was Project Lotus, while Project Rene was a separate game, not a direct sequel to Sims 4. And, he believes that Project Lotus may have been transformed into Project Rene, thus maintaining only one project.

In particular, we don't believe that EA would abandon the gold mine that is The Sims to stay in the The Sims 4, which gamers, despite loving and spending money on, have a lot of criticism for.
