A new genre for wrestling

It's a fact that, generally speaking, wrestling games are basically fighting games. And until then, I don't think anyone would have thought of taking it to the next level.

But Mega Cat Studios decided to dare and managed to bring the sport to something completely different. What was once a traditional fighting game has now been transformed into an RPG with turn-based combat.

Despite Mega Cat Studios to have dared with WrestleQuestHowever, it didn't neglect respect. This is a game that takes respect above all else and pays tribute to the greats of the genre, such as "Macho Man" and "The Snake".

JRPGs have never been so lively and humorous

Although it looks like any other JRPG, there's a surprising tone of humor and innovation here. Of course, this is wrestling, something that really catches the eye and innovates the fight.

WrestleQuest brings numerous combat skills to the JRPG, in addition to the classic options and the use of items. Signature moves are also present, and are part of a system created for the game, called "Hype".

Hitting moves, provoking opponents or countering blows will give you a higher Hype level. If you have enough by the end of the fight, you'll earn some extra rewards.

The extra rewards range from equipment and consumables to extra money or XP.

Of course, there's a bit of monotony in WrestleQuest

RPG is one of the most popular genres in gaming today, and of course the typical problem would be here.

Most of the time you are WrestleQuest you'll be completing some fights or doing side missions to level up. This is necessary in order to increase your stat points.

These statistics affect the way your character will act in matches, whether attacking or defending. Items can also vary these stats, either raw or with elements.

So, you can imagine that there's a bit of grinding going on here, right? But for those of you who are JRPG fans, I think you're home and well served.

WrestleQuest is a perfect game for fans

WrestleQuest is a love letter to all wrestling fans and, above all, JRPG fans. There's a lot of great fan service throughout.

But if you're not a sports fan, there's also a lot to get out of this excellent JRPG. Of course, as always, it's not a game for everyone.

With that, unfortunately I have to say that WrestleQuest was definitely not for me. I was captivated by the game's visuals and its proposal to take wrestling into a new genre.

But, as I'm not an expert on the game, nor am I a big fan of the JRPG genre - although I do have a few favorites - it didn't really manage to win me over. Of course, that doesn't stop me from appreciating all the game's qualities, such as a humorous narrative, a tailor-made RPG system that's neither too complicated nor too simple, and an excellent choice of art direction.

WrestleQuest It's not for everyone, but everyone should give a chance to the game that took wrestling out of the sameness of games and tried to revive it with a new approach.

Finally, WrestleQuest is available for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch e Netflix. We played the PCwith a key provided by Skybound Games.
