Xbox Series S won't delay generation according to Baldurs Gate 3 dev

O Xbox Series S has been considered a double-edged sword for the Microsoft. Although it offers the cheapest entry into the current generation of console games, its low-cost hardware can also be problematic for developers.

Since Microsoft announced that games on the platform cannot skip the Xbox Series SThe industry has been debating whether the cheaper console is holding back more capable hardware, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series Xfor multiplatform launches.

The CEO of Larian Studios was recently asked about his opinion on the subject. Contrary to popular belief, he had no negative opinions about the Xbox Series S.

Xbox Series S not a generation late, according to Baldur's Gate 3 developer

In the past, the studio faced difficulties with split-screen cooperation on the low-cost hardware of the Microsoft. After these problems, the Larian Studios has not yet announced an official release date for the versions of the Xbox Series X|S. However, Baldur's Gate 3 will be launched on PlayStation 5 in September.

Answering the podcast host's question "SkillUP" about the Xbox Series S affect third-party launches throughout generation, Swen Vincke he said:

"I think it's a good proposal to say that we have two devices, we want compatibility between the devices. To answer your question, it just sets parameters within which you have to develop and there are ways of doing that. They just require development efforts."

Swen Vincke is CEO of Larian Studios and one of the directors of Baldur's Gate 3. According to the developer Xbox Series SLike any other hardware, it comes with its own challenges.

That doesn't make it inherently terrible, even if it does lead to compromises for the games. The director compared it to PC development, claiming that studios are used to scaling down games for different configurations.

Therefore Xbox Series S offers a similar challenge. He also emphasized that studios have the choice between specific platforms, using a hypothetical console PlayStation 7 to make your point.

If PlayStation 7 were currently available, it would present a choice between skipping the older hardware to get more features or developing for previous consoles to ensure the game reaches more players.

The platform PC always offered a similar dilemma due to new video cards every two years, and in the Xbox Series S is no different. According to Swen Vincke, a Larian Studios does not have enough resources to work on all versions simultaneously.

As such, with enough time and effort, games can be made to work on the low-cost console of the Microsoft. Previously, Matt Booty of Xbox made a similar statement, encouraging developers to plan for the hardware of the Xbox.
