Gestalt: Steam & Cinder is an impeccable narrative metroidvania - Review

gestalt: steam & cinder review

Developed by Metamorphosis Gamesa small studio located in Los Angeles, Gestalt: Steam & Cinder puts players in control of Aletheia, who must thwart the evil plans of the Commissariat, the corrupt rulers of the City of Steam, Canaan.

Check out our review of Gestalt: Steam & Cinderwhich was only possible thanks to the sending of the review key by the game's national representative.

A very complex story with no loose ends

With Aletheia you will join the Soldners, a band of elite mercenaries from Irkalla who live only in the present, making you fight for the survival of humanity and see the truths hidden in the foundations of Canaan.

To do this, you'll move between various scenarios and events, from the underground market, the infernal forge, Vincent's bar and much more. Making it clear that the foundation of Gestalt: Steam & Cinder is the narrative, not the combat or its metroidvania structure.

After all, unlike many other games in the genre, using Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown as an example, Gestalt: Steam & Cinder is full of dialog, far more than you'd expect to see in a metroidvania. You'll find countless dialogues not only in the main objectives, but also in the secondary tasks, in Vincent's bar and more.

Gestalt: Steam & Cinder has simple but functional combat

Technically Gestalt: Steam & Cinder has very simple combat, where you have to vary the gameplay between dashes, evasions, double jumps for crossings and dodges and the standard attack, as well as techniques that will help you increase your strength and other attributes of Aletheia.

What's so great about Gestalt: Steam & Cinder? Is it worth playing?

There's not much more to say about Gestalt. It's a solid metroidvania that delivers what it promises. It has simple combat, and even fails to make the boss fights epic or memorable, but it is extremely functional.

In an artistic sense, Gestalt leaves nothing to be desired by other games in the genre, both in its soundtrack - which is actually incredible, for my personal taste - and in its visuals, with very distinct colors for each setting.

As far as the characters are concerned, we can find charismatic NPCs, as well as a stylish main character - Aletheia - who gives the game its charm. Gestalt: Steam & Cinder is an unquestionably necessary experience for any fan of metroidvania, but make sure you keep your foot on the ground and your alert on, as there are numerous dialogues.

Finally, Gestalt: Steam & Cinder is available at Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One.
