Developed by Capcom, the Japanese studio behind major franchises such as Dino Crisis, Resident Evil, Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter, Onimusha and more, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess comes as a surprise to show that creativity still has a place in the games industry.

Japan is portrayed in a grandiose way in Kunitsu-Gami

Not only did Capcom want to reinvent itself - at least for a while - in the industry, but it also wanted to pay a sincere tribute to its country, Japan.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess places players on Kafuku Mountain, a mountain dominated by maculation and which receives countless attacks from the Colerics, who target the Priestess. In the midst of this simple idea, you'll see Japanese culture introduced, such as the Kagura dance, the masks and the soundtrack itself, which is a delight for anyone who loves Japan.

A fun and strategic gameplay

With a sword, you must control Soh and protect the Priestess Yoshiro of Kafuku Mountain from the Colerics, who are targeting her. Then, you must recruit villagers who will receive strategic roles from you.

You'll be able to decide your positions, which enemies to focus on, your roles on the battlefield and more. All during the night.

During the day you have to purify the villages and prepare for nightfall. The villagers will also be very helpful at this stage, especially when you need to repair something.

All this strategy is blended into a fun combat that is very reminiscent of the style of Devil May Cryfrom Capcombut much more slowly and with a greater risk of damage.

Restoring peace is at the heart of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess

After strategizing during the day and fighting the choleric at night, you and the Priestess can then purify the tainted Torii Gates.

For this, Yoshiro will perform a Kagura dance, a dance characteristic of Shintoism that was originally performed in the Emperor's palace, representing the myth of the goddess of the South, Amaterasu.

Is it worth playing?

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a very different game from what we're used to nowadays, especially in this 2024 period. It's a game that's being extremely well received by gamers and especially by the Japanese, who have been well represented culturally within the game.

This isn't just a linear game, or even an open world. It's a set of stages where you not only have hordes to defeat, but also a great influence of strategy.

It's not a game for everyone, but anyone who has played classics like Okami, Shadow of the Colossus and other games that are considered works of art, will certainly have a certain appreciation with Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is now available for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One e Xbox Series. It is also available at Xbox Game Pass.
