How long does Final Fantasy XVI last?

With games becoming more and more expensive, many gamers have been focusing on the length of the games in order to invest in their price. And for those who like their games not so short, Final Fantasy XVI might appeal!

Today (June 20) is just two days away from the release of Final Fantasy XVI, and after a bombastic demo, the hype couldn't be higher, including for us here at Save State. And something that could add even more fuel to the fire is the fact that the game will have a very moderate campaign length, as well as a considerable amount of time for side quests.

Final Fantasy 16 game time: how long will it take to complete the game?

This answer comes from the director of Square Enix, Hiroshi Takai. The director spoke about the game's length at a interview with Everyeye in November 2022. According to Takai, players can expect the main story of Final Fantasy 16 to take around 35 to 40 hours to complete.

Takai went on to say that a full run of Final Fantasy 16 will probably require around 70 hours to complete. A completist run is essentially finishing 100% of the game, which means finding all the collectibles, completing all the main and side quests, seeing all the endings and acquiring all the achievements.

Good news for those who like challenges!

As revealed by IGN in a video Final Fantasy 16 features an unlockable difficulty mode called "Final Fantasy" that becomes available after completing the game. As you'd expect from a New Game Plus mode, your progress from another save is retained, but there are several features and surprises that almost make this feel like the definitive way to play the game.

For a start, the level cap for Clive increases to 100 (presumably from 50, but this has yet to be confirmed), and all the enemies also have their levels increased. You'll also encounter different enemies at earlier points in the game, such as seeing a Chimera as the mid-boss of Greatwood instead of a Wyvern.

One element of the difficulty mode that wasn't directly discussed in the IGN video is something that is sure to excite long-time Final Fantasy (and Kingdom Hearts !) fans - the Ultima Weapon. The description of the "Final Fantasy" difficulty mode notes that "To help you on your journey, the legendary "Ultima Weapon is available for crafting", which is similar to how it is unlocked in the main Kingdom Hearts games.

For those who don't know, the Ultima Weapon is a staple of the Final Fantasy series and is usually the most powerful weapon in the game. It has appeared in most of the main entries in the series, but considering that Final Fantasy 16 opted for a more grounded approach and decided not to use some of the iconic elements of the series (such as not allowing the player to control an airship), it's a little surprising to see it make the cut here.
