TopSpin 2K25 is amazing but lacks the 2K seal of quality - Review

After a hiatus of more than ten years, the franchise TopSpin finally returned, this time with TopSpin 2K25. While the franchise was previously developed by 2K CzechNow we've seen Hangar 13 take control of the franchise.

In case you didn't know, the Hangar 13 is known for developing Mafia III and the highly acclaimed Mafia: Definitive Edition, which reconstructed the first game in the franchise along the lines of the second and third games, as well as bringing stunning visuals to the franchise.

That said, read our review of TopSpin 2K25which was only possible thanks to a review key sent by 2K.

TopSpin 2K25 puts you in pursuit of the Grand Slam

Unlike most sports games, where there are numerous game modes, TopSpin 2K25 has a strong focus on career mode.

You'll end up in the shoes of an up-and-coming professional player, created by yourself through a complete character creator, and must face the biggest names in tennis on the sport's iconic courts and tournaments.

You will see your player step on Wimbledon, Roland-Garros, US Open, Australian Open until finally reaching the title of champion of the Grand Slam.

The multiplayer mode is challenging

There are three multiplayer modes in TopSpin 2K25Exhibition, World Tour and 2K Tour. Exhibition mode, as the name implies, allows you to choose one of the 25 available athletes and duel against another player (or in 2v2 mode).

O World Tour is one of the main multiplayer modes, and is an online competition where players (via MyPLAYER) will compete in tournaments, being ranked in seasonal leaderboards.

Every week two tournaments will be available, lasting seven days, with a third tournament being unlocked at weekends. By winning a match in these tournaments, you advance to the next round. Winning a tournament or losing a match will put you at the start again.

Whenever you complete a championship, you'll earn TP (Tornuament Points), which allow you to improve your player and climb the world leaderboards.

The 2K Tour because it's ranked, it's something I haven't delved into much, since my character doesn't yet have the skills to endure a match of this size. But, according to 2KThe mode has support for simultaneous games with players around the world. It should probably follow the pattern of what the sport does in real life, which is very interesting.

The 2K quality standard was missing

When you talk about a 2Kautomatically comes to mind NBA 2K, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) and best (probably the best) sports game franchises ever made.

Everything is impeccable in NBA 2K: The visuals, soundtrack, number of athletes, gameplay, content and game modes and more. Meanwhile, TopSpin 2K25 seems to be missing a bit of the standard 2K quality.

The career mode, although addictive, is a bit bland. While in NBA 2K we see a gigantic city with countless online courts, clothing stores and more; And in WWE 2K although it's a little more restrained, there's also a story and dialogues with choices, TopSpin has none of this.

We see a simple, raw menu where you have the option of going to training, special events or the championships. You can see some messages that arrive in your inbox and listen to some podcasts that pop up occasionally. Anyway, the fun is in beating your opponents and challenging yourself. Again, it's far from bad, but it's even below the Career of EA Sports FCor Towards the Stardom of eFootball 2021which even had a trophy cabinet. The 2K!

And that's not even to mention the fact that there are only 25 athletes available in exhibition mode, and that the visuals are extremely similar to TopSpin 4 (a game from more than ten years ago), no Portuguese subtitles and, apparently, not even servers in Brazil for the multiplayer mode.

Is it worth playing?

As I've said in other threads, I expected more from the game, mainly because I'm a big fan of NBA 2KBut I believe that in everything the game proposed, it got it right. After all, the studio's ideas are clearly well structured in the game.

If the franchise becomes annual, since it carries 2K25 in the name, it's a good chance that Hangar 13 study the possibility of investing even more in the career mode, bringing a story, trophy room, cutscenes and more.

TopSpin 2K25 is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One e Xbox Series. Buy your games at Nuuvem with promotional prices!
