The Rogue Prince of Persia is a promising roguelite of the beloved franchise - Preview

Known for being one of the founders of “The Triple-i Initiative 2024” and for developing some DLCs for Dead Cells, especially “Return to Castlevania”, The Rogue Prince of Persia is the new game from Evil Empire in partnership with Ubisoft.

Before we start our preview, we need to make it clear that the game is still in the early access stage, so changes may be made over time.

And finally, to thank Ubisoft Brazil for giving us a preview key of The Rogue Prince of Persia.

NOTE: WE DO NOT APPLY A FINAL GRADE TO PREVIEWS.

Persia is in danger again

With the support of those close to him, the Prince in The Rogue Prince of Persia must find the solution to save his kingdom, which has just been invaded by the Huns, the masters of shamanic magic, and prove his worth to his family.

To do this, you as the Prince must master acrobatic maneuvers to move around the game's horizontal maps, find different weapons, avoid traps, explore difficult areas and defeat the fearsome enemies you encounter.

Metroidvania embraced roguelite in The Rogue Prince of Persia

While we recently saw Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown strongly embrace the metroidvania genre, The Rogue Prince of Persia ends up dodging this obvious path.

The Rogue Prince of Persia is a roguelite, which, in my opinion, can even be considered a roguelike in its purest form. Here, after you die, you're taken back to the beginning of the game, as well as losing all your weapons.

In The Rogue there is no option to improve your character's attributes, for example. But you will find better weapons during your journey, as well as medallions that will change the way your run is built.

But it could all be for nothing. After all, you need to move and attack meticulously across the map. Don't think that just running around and dodging enemies will enable you to complete the game.

The progression of The Rogue

In The Rogue Prince of Persia we didn't find any kind of attribute improvement for the Prince. However, there are a few details along the way that can make a difference.

First, we need to talk about medallions. Medallions are items that can give the Prince numerous effects, depending on certain situations and actions. These medallions can set enemies on fire, poison them, stun them and more.

You can also use a medallion to upgrade a medallion you already have. This will make you even more powerful.

Enquanto os medalhões são utilizados durante a sua run atual, os Spirit Glimmers, traduzido no literal para algo como “Brilho do Espírito” servem como uma moeda que pode ser gasta no Oasis.

You can use the Spirit Glimmers to create items in Sukhra's forge, such as a grappling hook. Or, unlock medallions in Paachi's store, so that they appear in your next attempts.

You'll find Spirit Glimmers lying around the map, in chests or by defeating certain enemies in the scenery.

Respectful early access

At the beginning of May we saw Hades II has landed with an early access that has more content than its first game in its final form. Including, The Rogue Prince of Persia was postponed due to the launch of Hades II.

Now we see The Rogue arrive in the same way. Here we find around 12 to 13 hours of main paths, which are divided into six biomes. In these six biomes we can find eight main weapons and six tools.

So far, there have been two boss encounters to try. In addition to a variable number of medallions to build your construct and a few traversal rooms, which give you good rewards.

Also according to Evil EmpireOver a period of about a year, we'll see the game receive new levels, weapons, enemies, bosses, story acts and more. All this by collecting feedback from the community after each update.

The journey has barely begun and has already left a taste for more

The journey in The Rogue Prince of Persia is far from complete, and that's a fact. But even though the content isn't in its final form, the game is already worthy of giving you a taste for more.

Everything Evil Empire tried to do in this game, it got it right. The artwork is one of the best I've seen in video games in recent years, not to mention its involvement with the epic and immersive soundtrack.

The gameplay also has its charm. You can climb and walk on walls, jump on enemies, stand on pieces of wood and more. Not to mention the dynamic combat, which has good variations with the most different weapons.

If you're a fan of the franchise Prince of Persia and expected to return, this is certainly the best year of his life. The Rogue Prince of Persia is simply a great game, and manages to embrace everything that a roguelite/like should: excellent visual quality, impeccable soundtrack, dynamic gameplay and a good dose of difficulty.

The Rogue Prince of Persia is in early access at Steam.
